PETALING JAYA: The operator of news portal MyNewsHub’s social media account has been called up by Malaysia’s internet regulator to make a statement about publishing an old video clip showing a security exercise involving the chief secretary to the government.

The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission said reuse of old video clips could cause confusion among social media users.

In a statement this evening, MCMC said it takes seriously the use of a 70-second video clip purportedly showing a senior civil servant being stopped by auxiliary police when he attempted to climb on stage to accost the chief secretary, Zuki Ali.

The public services department said earlier today the video clip was of a simulation meant to test the preparedness of security personnel in facing provocative attacks.

MCMC said the case is being investigated for transmission of a communication deemed to be offensive or which could cause annoyance to another person. The offence carries a maximum penalty of a year’s jail or up to RM50,000 fine or both upon conviction.
