PETALING JAYA: The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has urged the public to stop sending, sharing and posting "hate speeches" in the social media.

Commission chairman Datuk Mohamed Sharil Tarmizi said netizens should be more sensitive while communicating online.

"As responsible citizens, we must be more sensitive and aware while communicating online.

"Think about the consequences and the feelings of our fellow brothers and sisters before posting comments or opinions in the social media," he said in a statement Wednesday.

He advised people to avoid communicating when their emotions were running high.

"Please calm down before you post anything.

"Every citizen in this country needs to abide by the laws and regulations," he added.

Mohamed Sharil said any dissatisfaction or unhappiness over certain issues should be channelled to the proper authorities.

"People must remember that not all information published online in social media is the truth," he said, adding that it was vital for the public to verify the authenticity of the information before uploading or sharing it.
