PETALING JAYA: The public needs to beware of scammers posing as Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) officers, says the regulatory body.
The Commission said these calls were made to deceive the public, adding that these imposters would claim that there was a complaint against the victim’s line and that they had committed some wrongdoing.
The MCMC added in a statement on Saturday(Jan 27) that the imposter would claim that the potential victim's line would be barred and blacklisted if they failed to adhere to the instructions given by the imposter.
It said that the Commission had received 259 complaints between Jan 1 and Thursday (Jan 25), of which 238 were calls made to inquire whether the call was actually from the regulatory body.
"Authorities including the MCMC will not ask for an individual’s private banking details and information. Therefore, the public has been advised to be careful and obtain the relevant confirmation," it said.
"Do not reveal any private information to unknown individuals or transfer money to questionable accounts," it added.
The MCMC said that the public had also been encouraged to block suspicious calls or install applications that would restrict certain calls or SMSes.
It added that announcements from the Commission will only be made through its official channels such as email, website, and social media platforms.
The MCMC then said that those who wish to channel information or lodge complaints on scams can do so with the police or the National Scam Response Centre at the 997 hotline which operates from 8am to 8pm.
