Ministry received 444 complaints on new media in January 2023

CYBERJAYA: The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has received 444 complaints on new media this year, said Communications and Digital Minister Fahmi Fadzil.
Fahmi, who described the number of complains as worrying, said MCMC would strengthen programmes and activities to fight the spread of false information, hate speech and online scams.
"I hope this initiative will continue and be expanded to drive Malaysia towards a positive cyberworld," he said at the event to mark the 10th anniversary of the Klik Dengan Bijak (KDB) initiative here today.
Present were Deputy Communications and Digital Minister Teo Nie Ching, Communications and Digital Ministry secretary-general Datuk Seri Mohammad Mentek and MCMC interim chairman Datuk Muhammad Azmi Mohd Zain.
KDB is an initiative introduced in 2012 to educate and increase Internet users' awareness of online security by emphasising self-control based on the Rukun Negara principles.
Fahmi suggested that MCMC use information from the public to improve the KDB initiative.
"I would like to discuss with MCMC, as well as schools and public and private higher education institutions, because they are part of the digital economy that we are developing."
He said he supported the KDB initiative as it provided the public with awareness and education about positive, productive and responsible use of the Internet.
He congratulated the MCMC over the selection of the KDB initiative as a finalist for the World Summit on the Information Society 2023 award, which will take place from March 17 to 23 in Geneva, Switzerland.
