2016 Malaysia Developers’ Day: Driving the ‘Internet of Things’ in Asia

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 26, 2016 — The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) and AT&T will host the fourth Malaysia Developers’ Day in Kuala Lumpur, scheduled for September 22-23, 2016. The event will encourage innovators and entrepreneurs to create Internet of Things (IoT) apps.

Winners will share cash prizes worth US$13,000 (~MYR49,400). They’ll also get Nanodegree scholarships worth US$10,000 (~MYR40,000) from AT&T and Udacity. Southeast Asian based early stage VC firm Golden Gate Ventures will also give each winning team 6 months of mentoring.

Last year, 128 participants created 18 new app ideas.

Now, more teams from across Asia will compete. Their mission? In 24 hours, harness the IoT—with a special emphasis on machine learning and data analytics—to build an app. This year’s categories:
  • Smart city
  • Community
  • Lifestyle

MCMC and AT&T will give the developer teams tools they need to quickly create new apps, which will include the powerful AT&T M2X IoT development platform. It offers a toolset to quickly create and refine prototypes, and cloud-based data storage to help collect, analyze and share IoT data. Tech experts will also be at the event to lend support.

Students and other future developers who want to build new skills can attend a coding 101 workshop the same day.

The Strategic Communication Division of MCMC said that over the last three years, this event has really showcased Asian developers’ talents.

“This year, we hope to see even more innovation that will drive our region forward. We believe the developers and those with great ideas waiting to be transformed into tangible, usable and marketable result are keen on participating, even if they do not possess much knowledge in creating an app. And that is why MYDD has always been about people coming together to merge their ideas into wonderful results,” it added.

“It’s exciting to sponsor this great event again with MCMC,” said Bernard Yee, regional president, Asia Pacific, AT&T. “This is an excellent platform for inspiring and empowering Asian developers. Contestants will gain skills and find new ways to unlock the power of the Internet of Things in Asia.”

“We are always excited to meet innovators and entrepreneurs at the Malaysia Developers’ Day. They all share the same passion for their product or idea and it’s a pleasure for us to be a small part of their journey," said Michael Lints, venture partner, Golden Gate Ventures.

In addition, 5 participants will win Nanodegree scholarships, funded by AT&T and Udacity. This will help them earn an online degree to prepare for careers in the tech industry.

“Through AT&T Aspire, we want to foster innovation and provide people with the tools needed for careers in technology. These Nanodegree scholarships will give hackathon contestants the opportunity to continue innovating and creating technology that can build a better tomorrow,” said Anne Wintroub, director of Social Innovation, AT&T.

The 2016 event will take place at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre.
