Report to MCMC If Charged For Prepaid Registration

13 Dec 2006, BERNAMA,
KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 13 (Bernama) -- Mobile phone users asked to pay a fee to have their prepaid numbers registered should report the matter to the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC), Deputy Minister of Energy, Water and Communications Datuk Shaziman Abu Mansor said Wednesday. He said registration of prepaid numbers was free and it would end on Friday. "I have been told that there are agents who take advantage of this situation, especially when users are making last-minute registration, by asking for a fee. "Mobile phone users who have information about this can make a report to the MCMC. Operators like Maxis and Celcom will take action against their agents for charging users," he said in reply to a question from Dr Mohd Hayati Othman (PAS-Pendang) in the Dewan Rakyat. Shaziman said the registration of all prepaid mobile users would make tracing senders of "poison" SMS (short-messaging service) by police a lot easier. "This problem will be overcome once registration of all prepaid mobile phone users is completed in a few days," he told Baharum Mohamed (BN-Sekijang). The Deputy Minister said abuse of network or applications by sending lewd comments and threats aimed at hassling or hurting others was an offence under Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998. Those found guilty can be fined up to RM50,000 or jailed not more than a year, or both.
