More to be done for broadband penetration

14 Mar 2012, New Straits Times
KUALA LUMPUR: More projects under the National Broadband Initiative will soon be announced to achieve a 75 per cent broadband usage, said Information, Communications and Culture Minister Datuk Seri Dr Rais Yatim. "We are hoping to achieve this target by having more projects. We are also going to improve the e-government system to serve the rakyat better," he said. NBI was an initiative launched in March 2010. It achieved an initial target of 50 per cent household broadband penetration by the end of 2010. To improve broadband penetration and increase information technology awareness in the country, the government initiated the 1Malaysia laptop project. The joint programme under the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission and the ministry benefited students and other recipients. More than 60,000 laptops had been distributed since last year. Rais was responding to the royal address by Yang di-Pertuan Agong Tuanku Abdul Halim Mu'adzam Shah, who praised the various reforms made by the government delivery system, especially in terms of online services and broadband penetration.
