10 May 2002, Bernama
The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) will hold an open day at all its regional offices in conjunction with World Telecommunication Day (WTD) 2002. Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Mahathir Mohamad is scheduled to launch the WTD 2002 celebration on May 17. The three-day event will begin on May 15 at Kuching, Kota Kinabalu, penang, Kuantan and Johor Baru regional offices. In addition to the open day, MCMC will also organise a series of programmes starting from May 11 to May 26. They include a consumer awareness programme, a "live" telecast of the Prime Minister's speech from Bangi to Langkawi, Kuching and Kota Kinabalu, and an exhibition in Kuala Lumpur on MCMC's objectives and responsibilities. The WTD's celebration this year is themed: "ICT for all: Empowering people to cross the digital divide." Malaysia has adopted its own theme "Bridging the digital divide through convergence" to reflect the ongoing initiatives of the Government, MCMC said. In another development, MCMC said Mohd Hussin Ali's appointment as head of its northern region office in Penang is expected to give Penang, Perak, Kedah and Perlis a boost in terms of technological advancement in standards and development in the communications industry. Mohd Hussin's expertise has been in wave radio network implementation, fibre optics and network management system operations and maintenance. He had also been involved in Telekom Malaysia's high speed microwave radio network implementation projects while working with Sapura Holdings. Before joining MCMC's technical division in 2000, Mohd Hussin also worked with Time dotCom. He has been responsible for the development of technical standards for the appointment of certifying agencies, the development and assessment of network performance and advising on technical aspects of licensing.
