Cyberjaya, 3 August 2005: On 27 July 2005, the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) through its website (http://www.mcmc.gov.my) announced its plans to conduct a second round of tender for spectrum to roll out 3G services. The first round of tender for similar services was implemented in year 2002. The successful bidders in the first round were Telekom Malaysia Berhad and UMTS (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd. The two successful bidders have commenced their commercial 3G operations this year. In deciding to conduct a second round of tender, the MCMC has taken into consideration the current positive trend in the rollout of 3G services worldwide, the availability of spectrum and the need to promote and sustain competition in order to ensure innovative, efficient and affordable services for the consumer. The details on all aspects of the proposed second round tender are available on the Commission’s website http://www.mcmc.gov.my under “What’s New”.
