MORE than 60 Internet community centres are helping students in Perak with online learning.

State communication and multimedia committee chairman Khairul Shahril Mohamed said, “In areas that don’t have strong Internet connectivity and gadgets, 66 Internet community centres have been set up across the state to help students, especially those taking the Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia and Sijil Tinggi Persekolahan Malaysia exams.”

These centres were being monitored by the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission, he said.

Under the Prihatin Economic Stimulus Package, 1GB of data is being provided to students daily for free.

Khairul Shahril said free wireless Internet connections were also available in 15 strategic locations in the state.

“We have also approved RM125,000 to purchase equipment for green screen studio at all district education offices so they can produce videos under the ‘Tuisyen Cikgu Saarani’ programme,” he said.

He added that 20,000 YES smartphones had been given to students.

YTL Communication had also set up 248 1BRIS (1 Bestari Net Receiver Integrated System) telecommunication towers.

“The towers, set up at schools, will provide Internet connectivity for students living within a 1.5km to 2km radius,” said Khairul Shahril.
