to the International Telecommunication The International Telecommunication Union (ITU) is an
international organisation within the United Nations system which brings
governments and industry together to coordinate the establishment and
operation of global telecommunication networks and services. It is also
responsible for standardisation, coordination and development of
international telecommunications including radiocommunications, as well as
the harmonization of national policies.
The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission is
required to notify the International Telecommunication Union on various
matters in accordance with the Radio Regulations, one of them is to
provide information for the Maritime Mobile Access Retrieval System
(MARS).
The Maritime Mobile Access Retrieval System is an online
database query information system for the Maritime Community, especially
those involved in search and rescue activities. The system is intended to
support the Global Maritime Distress and Safety System and used to
identify ship stations in distress as well as provide pertinent
information about vessels. The database can be accessed through a
dedicated dial-up system and from the International
Telecommunication Union website. The Maritime Mobile Access Retrieval System
contains the following: Maritime The Maritime Mobile Service Identity is a
nine-digit number assignment system to uniquely identify maritime mobile
service. For ship stations, the Maritime Mobile Service Identity comprises
a three-digit country of registration identifier or Maritime
Identification Digits (MID), followed by a six-digit ship
identifier.
